COVID-19 support programs organized by Australian states and  education providers

Australia prides itself on being a safe, welcoming and multicultural country. Australia have always supported one another in times of need. This includes looking after the health, safety and wellbeing of international students. The Australian Government, state and territory governments, educational institutions and the Australian community have various programs and support in place to help international students in Australia.

Below we have compiled a list of Australian states/territories, education institutions, and federal government supports available to international students.

State-wise Support

Australian Capital Territory
The ACT Government is delivering a $351 million economic survival package to support the ACT community through the public health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

These measures will help businesses and industry, protect as many jobs as possible, support Canberra households and support our most vulnerable.

NSW Health is responding to an outbreak of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and have implemented a range of measures to promptly identify cases of COVID-19 infection and prevent transmission in NSW.

Northern Territory
To support Territorians during these uncertain economic times a $5 million Worker and Wellbeing Fund has been established for Territory workers. The fund will complement Northern Territory and Australian Government funding initiatives with an aim to help fill new and emerging gaps.

South Australia
On 21 April 2020, the South Australian Government announced a new $13.8 million support package for South Australia’s international education sector. The funding, which is part of the Community and Jobs Support Fund, is designed to support international students residing in South Australia impacted by the coronavirus restrictions.

Tasmania
An additional $4 million will be provided to the Community Support Fund (the Fund), bringing the total Fund allocation to $5 million.

The Fund will provide support to Tasmania’s most vulnerable through food relief, emergency accommodation, essential transport and effective communication to ensure those Tasmanians susceptible to being disconnected stay connected and aware of the ever-changing environment.

Housing and Public Works Minister Mick de Brenni said that the state government was investing $24.7 million in an 8-point housing and homelessness plan to ensure that vulnerable Queenslanders get the services they need during this public health emergency.
